G-STIC at the STI Forum in 2019

The annual Multi-stakeholder Forum on Science Technology and Innovation for the Sustainable Development Goals (STI Forum) is a part of the Technology Facilitation Mechanism mandated by the 2030 Agenda. The fourth STI Forum took place on 14 - 15 May 2019 in the Headquarters of the United Nations in New York. This edition was dedicated to Science, Technology and Innovation for ensuring inclusiveness and equality, with a special focus on SDGs 4, 8, 10, 13, and 16.

Following the STI Forum, the key findings from the G-STIC Conference of 2018 were shared at the G-STIC event on May 16.

Sharing the main messages of the G-STIC conference in 2018

Technological innovations exist all over the world that allow countries to jumpstart sustainable economic development and become market leaders in the emerging green economy. These innovations range from wastewater treatment, desalination, mining, carbon capture and use, to the application of artificial intelligence.

Some of these market-ready integrated technological solutions were showcased during the G-STIC event. Innovators and solutions providers from the health, energy, water and ICT sectors, provided concrete examples of doable ways to move societies and economies onto more sustainable development paths.

Promoting inclusion and equity in technological systems

In line with the fourth STI Forum’s theme, promoting inclusion and equity in technological systems, UN Women delegates explored during the G-STIC event how to unlock the potential of women as a driver for sustainable technology. UNMGCY representatives discussed how youth can contribute to jumpstarting sustainable technologies for the SDGs.

An interactive panel discussed integrated technological solutions for economic growth. Several case studies highlighted the importance of quality education in enabling youth to build economic resilience for themselves and their communities.
